Cyprus football authorities investigate VAR and match manipulation claims

The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and its Ethics and Sports Protection Committee have launched an investigation into potential match manipulation and VAR irregularities following a complaint by AEL Limassol. The investigation stems from an incident during the APOEL vs. AEL match involving the red card issued to player Kafou.

A report from the CFA Referees Committee found procedural issues regarding how the incident was communicated to the VAR team and how the review process was activated. While the committee clarified that the red card itself was correct according to protocol, it noted flaws in the operational procedure.

In response to AEL's allegations of external interference in the VAR process, the Ethics Committee has officially opened an inquiry to examine possible offenses of match manipulation. The investigation is expected to take up to three months, with the potential for findings to be referred to the Attorney General if criminal activity is suspected. AEL management has expressed intent to involve the police to ensure a thorough examination of the audio materials and evidence collected.
