AEMPS alerts risk of involuntary opening in Carevo shower commodes

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) has issued an alert regarding Carevo shower commodes manufactured by ArjoHuntleigh AB. There is a risk that the lateral support may open involuntarily during use, which could lead to patient falls and serious injuries.

The issue may be caused by user movements, such as incomplete locking of the handles or accidental contact with the handle using a thigh or knee. Additionally, a defect in the torsion springs in certain units manufactured between February 21, 2024, and October 29, 2025, may prevent the handles from locking correctly.

To mitigate risks, the manufacturer has updated usage instructions. Operators are advised to ensure the side panels fit securely by listening for a characteristic ‘click’ and verifying that both latches on each lateral support are in the locked position. Users should also avoid hitting or pushing the handle with their legs while manipulating patients.
