Aena announces 13,000 million euro investment plan for Spanish airports

Aena has announced its third Airport Regulation Document (DORA III), a major investment plan mobilizing approximately 13,000 million euros across the Spanish airport network over the next five years. The plan aims to accommodate an additional 41.1 million passengers by 2031 through operational and technological improvements, such as accelerating check-in, security, and boarding processes.

In Madrid, Barajas airport will see expansions to Terminal 4 and 4S, benefiting Iberia. In Barcelona, El Prat will focus on efficiency reforms in Terminals 1 and 2, though environmental and acoustic restrictions may limit slot increases for airlines like Vueling, Ryanair, and Easyjet.

In Menorca, the local government (GOB Menorca) has raised concerns regarding the airport's expansion. While Aena maintains that its planned 170 million euro investment is not intended to increase flight numbers, official projections in the DORA 2027-2031 document suggest an increase of 1,710 annual operations and over 165,000 additional passengers per year by 2031. The GOB warns that this growth will increase pressure on the island's water, energy, and waste management resources.
