Aena assumes management of Rio de Janeiro's Galeão Airport

Spanish company Aena has officially assumed management of Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport following the signing of a share purchase agreement. The concession, which follows a R$ 2.9 billion auction won in March, grants Aena administration of the terminal until 2039.

With this acquisition, Aena expands its Brazilian operations to 18 airports across ten states, managing an annual passenger flow of over 63 million. The Galeão terminal also joins Aena’s global network of 81 airports across five countries. The company aims to leverage this scale to coordinate operations with other managed terminals, specifically Congonhas in São Paulo, to consolidate Galeão as an international hub.

Aena’s management strategy will focus on four key areas: operational efficiency, improving the passenger experience, strengthening cargo transport, and generating value for the state of Rio de Janeiro. CEO Maurici Lucena stated that the acquisition is a strategic milestone that enhances the airport's potential for both national and international connectivity.
