Aeolian Islands fishing industry faces crisis amid declining catches

The fishing industry in the Aeolian Islands is facing a severe crisis characterized by a growing gap between traditional maritime identity and the actual availability of local seafood. In Lipari, which hosts the archipelago's largest small-scale fishing fleet of approximately 100 vessels, fishermen report declining catches alongside rising fuel and labor costs.

Environmental factors, including the climate crisis and decades of indiscriminate fishing, have contributed to emptying local waters. Consequently, many operators have transitioned from deep-sea fishing to coastal fishing or fishing tourism. The sector also faces a generational shift, as fewer young people are entering the profession due to uncertain incomes and demanding working conditions.

Despite the scarcity of local catches, demand remains high due to massive seasonal tourism. This has created a paradox where restaurant menus feature abundant seafood, such as swordfish and tuna, while much of the supply is imported from Sicily, Greece, Spain, and Morocco. Research by the Aquastudio Research Institute and Blue Marine Foundation has identified 23 imported species being used in the islands, including those traditionally associated with the local archipelago.
