Aeon and Don Quijote adjust retail strategies amid price shifts
Aeon Retail reported that existing store sales remained flat in August, despite facing challenges from heavy rainfall. The company successfully met consumer demand for convenience and seasonal items during the Obon holiday and summer vacation periods. Strong performance was noted in food categories such as grilled meats, sashimi, and seasonal fruits, as well as in health and beauty care sectors.
In response to a significant wave of price increases expected in the food and beverage sector, major retailers are implementing strategic price reductions to attract consumers. Aeon has implemented temporary price cuts on 145 TopValu private brand items. Meanwhile, Pan Pacific International Holdings, the operator of Don Quijote, is expanding its presence with a new food-focused retail format called ‘Robin Hood.’ This new concept aims to combine fresh food procurement capabilities with the discount DNA characteristic of Don Quijote to compete in the discount supermarket market.
