AEON shifts focus to Vietnam with new Ninh Binh project and Thailand exit

AEON is undergoing a strategic pivot in Southeast Asia, shifting focus from Thailand toward Vietnam.

In Vietnam, AEON has broken ground on the AEON Phủ Lý shopping center in Ninh Binh province. The project involves an investment of over 940 billion VND and covers a floor area of approximately 26,264 m². Scheduled to open in 2027, the facility is expected to create more than 800 jobs and serve as a modern shopping and entertainment hub in the Red River Delta region.

Concurrently, AEON is exiting its supermarket business in Thailand after four decades. The company is transferring its shares in AEON (Thailand) to Central Food Retail, with the transaction expected to conclude by September 30. This move follows years of declining revenue and store closures in the Thai market. The decision aligns with AEON's 2026-2030 mid-term plan to divest from low-profit activities and concentrate resources on high-growth markets, specifically targeting Vietnam as a primary growth driver.
