Aerobic Exercise Boosts Brain Vascular Health in Older Adults at Risk of Alzheimer’s

Recent neurological research highlights that the aging brain remains capable of forming new neural connections, and lifestyle interventions can strengthen this neuroplasticity. Studies show that activities such as high‑intensity aerobic exercise increase brain‑derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and improve cerebral blood flow, helping to delay cognitive decline.

A one‑year randomized controlled trial involving participants with mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) found that sustained aerobic training reduced cerebrovascular impedance and raised both brain blood flow and conductance, outperforming a stretching‑and‑toning program. These vascular improvements are linked to a slower progression of Alzheimer’s‑related degeneration, suggesting that long‑term aerobic exercise is a key preventive strategy for older adults at high risk of dementia.

Researchers emphasize that such benefits develop cumulatively, reinforcing the importance of regular, long‑term aerobic activity alongside other brain‑healthy habits like cognitive training, social engagement, and a balanced diet.
