AERODOM and Eco-Bahía extend sea turtle conservation program to 2030

AERODOM, the operator of Presidente Juan Bosch International Airport, and the Eco-Bahía Ecological Foundation, part of Grupo Piñero, have signed an alliance to extend their sea turtle conservation program until 2030. The initiative focuses on protecting the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) and other marine turtle species that nest on the northeastern coasts of the Dominican Republic.

The program includes the surveillance and protection of nests in Nagua, La Majagua, and Cosón, as well as the coastal strip near El Catey airport. To support these efforts, AERODOM will provide an exhibition area at El Catey airport featuring an informative wall and sculpture, along with an office for the Eco-Bahía field team.

Recent data shows the program has successfully reduced nest looting from 95% in 2024 to 7.7% during the 2026 season. The partnership also includes environmental education activities in local schools within Gran Estero, La Majagua, Los Yayales, and Matancitas to combat threats such as habitat loss and marine pollution.
