Aeroitalia to exit Sardinia territorial continuity service
Aeroitalia has announced its intention to withdraw from the territorial continuity system in Sardinia by January 2027. CEO Gaetano Intrieri cited rising fuel costs, influenced by international tensions and maritime disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, as a primary driver for the decision. Additionally, the company reported that approximately 20 million euros in regional funding promised by the Sardinia Region had not been received.
The move has sparked political criticism. Marco Tedde, a former mayor of Alghero and national councilor for Forza Italia, highlighted a contradiction in regional policy: while the airline prepares to leave Sardinian routes, the Regional Councilor for Labor, Desirè Manca, recently inaugurated a flight attendant training course organized by Aeroitalia and funded by regional student vouchers.
Residents of Sardinia face potential increases in travel costs and reduced transport options, as the island lacks extensive land-based alternatives like trains or buses. The regional government has previously sought agreements with multiple airlines to maintain subsidized rates and ensure connectivity for essential travel, work, and study.
