Aeroméxico suspends all flights to Tulum airport

Aeroméxico will temporarily suspend all operations at the Tulum International Airport “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” starting September 30. The airline cited “market conditions” and a strategy to maximize its route network as the primary reasons for the decision. This move leaves the terminal without Mexico’s flag carrier, significantly impacting connectivity between Tulum and major hubs like Mexico City (AICM and AIFA).

The suspension follows a period of declining passenger traffic at the airport. Data indicates a notable drop in travelers, particularly in the international segment, compared to previous years. Factors contributing to the regional tourism decline include the end of airline subsidies, massive sargassum seaweed influxes, and changes in access costs to local archaeological sites.

To assist affected travelers, Aeroméxico has implemented a flexibility policy titled “Tulum TQO offer adjustment,” which allows for rebooking on other flights, electronic vouchers, or full refunds. While Aeroméxico exits, other domestic carriers including Viva Aerobus, Volaris, and Mexicana de Aviación are expected to maintain their flight schedules to the destination.
