Aeroméxico CEO discusses market competition and Caracas route
Aeroméxico CEO Andrés Conesa has raised concerns regarding the potential merger between low-cost carriers Viva and Volaris, which aims to create Grupo Más Vuelos. Conesa argued that such a merger could lead to significant market concentration in Mexico, noting that antitrust authorities previously required Aeroméxico and Mexicana de Aviación to be sold separately to prevent similar monopolies.
Despite competitive shifts, Conesa stated that Aeroméxico will focus on strengthening its own operations through investments in aircraft, personnel, routes, and product quality. The National Antitrust Commission (CNA) is expected to rule on the Viva-Volaris merger before the end of the year.
Additionally, Conesa announced plans to resume direct flights between Mexico City and Caracas in the first quarter of 2027. The delay from the original schedule was attributed to operational impacts following earthquakes in June 2026. The resumption of this route remains contingent upon obtaining necessary regulatory approvals from aeronautical authorities.
