Aeroméxico confronts passenger protests and violent clash at Mexico City airport
A Aeroméxico flight bound for Chiapas suffered a tire explosion on the runway at Mexico City International Airport (AICM), leaving passengers stranded for six hours in hot conditions. Travelers complained about being kept inside the aircraft and then transferred to an air‑condition‑less bus, with children and infants exposed to heat. PRI secretary General Carolina Viggiano and former Coahuila governor Rubén Moreira criticised the airline’s handling and called for stronger passenger protection laws.
In a separate incident at AICM’s Terminal 2, a group of passengers assaulted Aeroméxico customer‑service staff, prompting security intervention. Video of the altercation spread on social media, showing physical fights, threats, and furniture being thrown. The airport authorities detained the involved individuals and handed them over to the civil court. The airline also noted a 9% drop in passenger traffic in June, attributed to the World Cup’s impact on domestic demand.
