Mexico investigates sale of 12.9 million personal records on Telegram

The Mexican Secretaría Anticorrupción y Buen Gobierno is investigating the alleged sale of over 12.9 million personal records on Telegram. The data, which was detected through active monitoring on September 22, 2026, is reportedly linked to various call centers. The leaked information includes sensitive details such as full names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, tax IDs (RFC), home addresses, and bank details.

A sample of 13,000 records from 13 different databases was reviewed by authorities. This sample contained trade names of 23 companies, including major entities such as Amazon, BBVA, Santander, Banorte, HSBC, and Liverpool. While the investigation is ongoing, the authority has not yet confirmed the authenticity or the original source of the databases.

This incident follows a separate reported leak involving 15 million Aeroméxico passenger records on September 20, 2026. In response to the government's announcements, the Asociación Mexicana de Internet (AIMX) expressed concern regarding the public naming of companies before the authenticity of the data is verified, warning that premature exposure could cause reputational damage and hinder criminal investigations.
