AESAN advises on improving nutritional habits in children's breakfasts

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) is highlighting the importance of reviewing breakfast and snack routines for children to prevent the daily consumption of ultra-processed foods. Common items such as sugary cereals, cocoa drinks, cookies, and fruit juices often contain high amounts of free sugars, which can displace more nutritious options.

To improve childhood nutrition, AESAN recommends prioritizing fresh fruit, whole grains, and natural dairy products without added sugar. Experts suggest that instead of banning specific foods, families should focus on the frequency of consumption and carefully check ingredient labels rather than relying on packaging marketing. Following World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to limit sugar intake can also help prevent issues such as dental cavities.
