Aetolia-Acarnania water shortages raised in Greek Parliament
Miltiadis Zambaras, a Member of Parliament for Aetolia-Acarnania, has raised urgent concerns in the Greek Parliament regarding severe water supply shortages in the region. Despite the prefecture possessing the country’s largest water resources—including the Acheloos River, the Evinos River, and various lakes and springs—residents in numerous areas are facing critical shortages.
Specific locations mentioned as suffering from low pressure or complete outages include Papadathes, Zevgaraki, Ano Kerasovo, Kastraki, Kokkinopylia, Aitoloiko, Missolonghi, and Astako. Zambaras characterized the situation as a structural problem caused by aging, breaking networks and insufficient infrastructure, rather than a lack of natural resources. He noted that while citizens continue to receive water bills, the service provided is inadequate.
Factors cited for the crisis include the climate crisis, drought, increased consumption, and aging pipelines. Zambaras criticized the government for a perceived lack of a cohesive plan and raised concerns regarding the merger of local water supply companies and the potential privatization of water. He has called on the Ministry to provide a comprehensive overview of the situation and to convene a meeting with regional authorities and municipalities to implement immediate solutions.
