AEW Energie launches renewable heat network in Aargau as Stadtwerke Schweinfurt expands district heating

AEW Energie AG has begun construction of the AEW Wärmeverbund Mutschellen in the Canton of Aargau, Switzerland. After receiving a building permit in early November 2025, work on the new district‑heating plant on the Sika site in Widen will start after Easter, with the network slated to operate from the 2027/28 heating season. The plant will primarily use a 3,200 kW wood‑chip furnace, supplemented by a heat pump, an oil boiler for peak loads, and a 600 kW power‑to‑heat unit. The system will serve the municipalities of Widen, Berikon and Rudolfstetten, replacing roughly one million litres of heating oil per year and cutting CO₂ emissions by about 2,800 tonnes annually. The project, costing around CHF 21 million, aims for at least 90 % renewable heat supply.

In Schweinfurt, Germany, Stadtwerke Schweinfurt is preparing to extend its district‑heating network. Starting at the end of July, a park‑ban will be imposed on Auenstraße to allow construction, with work on the new connection scheduled for early August 2026. Temporary full road closures may be required, but emergency‑service access will be maintained. The expansion will enable additional households to receive climate‑friendly heating, supporting the city’s sustainability goals and benefiting from various funding programmes.
