AEX index fluctuates amid semiconductor gains and Fed rate anticipation

The Amsterdam AEX index showed mixed performance amid anticipation of a Federal Reserve interest rate decision. In one session, the index rose approximately 0.4 percent to 1,100.71 points, driven largely by gains in the semiconductor sector, specifically ASML and ASMI, which saw increases of 2.0 percent and 1.6 percent respectively.

In a separate trading period, the AEX closed nearly flat at 1,096.14 points. Market activity was heavily influenced by expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve would implement a quarter-percentage-point interest rate hike to combat inflation. This move would mark the first rate change under Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.

Energy stocks faced downward pressure as oil prices fell by more than 3 percent. Shell saw a decline of over 2 percent, while BP and TotalEnergies also experienced losses. Conversely, semiconductor companies like ASMI, Besi, and ASML remained strong performers, and ArcelorMittal recorded a gain of 2.3 percent.
