Afa Försäkring funds research on PFAS exposure and airborne infection

Afa Försäkring has allocated nearly 38 million SEK to eight new research projects focused on occupational health and the working environment.

Among these initiatives, the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute will receive approximately 4.7 million SEK to investigate PFAS exposure within the sewage and waste industries. Led by Anneli Julander, the project aims to map how employees come into contact with these persistent chemicals in wastewater, sludge, and waste, ultimately providing practical support to improve risk assessments and workplace routines.

Additionally, Lund University has been granted over 6 million SEK for a project led by Jakob Löndahl. This research focuses on developing improved methods to measure and prevent airborne infections within the healthcare sector, specifically examining the interaction between airborne transmission and surface-based contamination, as well as the effectiveness of improved air purification and safer work protocols.
