Argentine Football Association rolls out new match rules to speed up play

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has introduced a set of seven new regulations for the Primera Nacional, effective from 1 August 2026. Tested previously at the Club World Cup, the rules aim to make matches more dynamic, cut unnecessary interruptions and increase transparency on the field.

Key changes include a maximum ten‑second window for a substituted player to leave the pitch, a five‑second limit for throw‑ins and goal‑kicks, and a protocol requiring any player who receives on‑field medical attention to stay out for at least one minute before re‑entering. Players are also prohibited from covering their mouths during disputes, with violations potentially resulting in a red card. Additional measures tighten penalties for deliberate time‑wasting and introduce a “double‑touch” penalty rule for accidental double contacts on penalties.

The AFA says the reforms will be applied across the national competition to improve the flow of the game and reduce delays, with clubs and officials expected to adapt immediately.
