AFA launches first official Sub-12 women's football tournament
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has launched its first official Sub-12 women's football tournament. The competition began on August 10, 2026, featuring 11 clubs from the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, including Boca, River, Racing, San Lorenzo, Independiente, Huracán, Ferro, Platense, Vélez, Banfield, and UAI Urquiza.
Targeting girls born between 2014 and 2016, the tournament aims to strengthen the country's formative football structures. AFA President Claudio Tapia stated that the initiative provides opportunities that did not exist a decade ago, emphasizing that these formative categories are essential for both national football and future national team selections.
The tournament regulations prioritize player development, mandating that five substitute players must each receive at least 12 minutes of playing time to ensure participation. The launch coincides with the period leading up to August 21, the Day of the Argentine Female Footballer.
