AFAD expands UAV inventory to 191 units for search and rescue
AFAD President Ali Hamza Pehlivan announced that the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency's inventory of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones has reached 191 units. The announcement was made during a UAV-supported search and rescue competition in Samsun.
The inventory includes 166 drones, 20 tethered drones for night lighting, 3 UAVs, and 2 heavy-lift drones. Over the past three years, these platforms have participated in approximately 1,750 operations, totaling nearly 10,000 flight hours. These technological efforts have been credited with the safe rescue of 244 citizens across 445 specific cases.
Beyond technology, Pehlivan highlighted human resource growth, noting that AFAD now has approximately 5,000 permanent search and rescue personnel. When including accredited civil society and other organizational teams, the total capacity reaches 175,000 people. Additionally, the agency has made strides in localization, now producing 60 out of 75 previously imported search and rescue equipment items domestically. The agency is also integrating artificial intelligence into unmanned vehicle software to improve detection and mission planning.
