AFAD to establish earthquake observation station in Uludere
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has begun project work to establish a new earthquake observation station in the Uludere district of Şırnak. As part of the 2026 investment program, this station is one of eight new recording stations planned across Turkey to expand the existing seismic monitoring network.
Following site inspections and soil studies conducted by AFAD officials, the İnceler neighborhood has been selected as the installation site. Equipment, including the station cabin and mounting components, has already been delivered to the Şırnak Provincial Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate. Technical teams are expected to complete the assembly and install specialized devices in the coming days.
Once operational, the station will enhance the capacity for real-time monitoring and precise data collection regarding seismic activity in Şırnak and its surrounding areas. This data will be integrated into AFAD’s existing network, which currently operates 1,200 recording devices, including seismometers, accelerometers, and fixed Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), making it the second largest earthquake observation network in Europe.
