AFC considers host change for 2027 Asian Cup due to security concerns
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is reportedly preparing an emergency meeting in Tokyo to discuss the future of the 2027 Asian Cup. The tournament, originally scheduled to be hosted by Saudi Arabia, faces potential delays or a change in host nation due to escalating security concerns involving attacks on civilian infrastructure, airports, and energy facilities within Saudi Arabia.
While no official decision has been announced, Japan and South Korea have been mentioned as potential alternative hosts. Member federations, including the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), are currently monitoring the situation closely as they await formal notification regarding the tournament's status.
In a separate development regarding the tournament's participants, Indonesia has been drawn into Group F for the 2027 edition. The Indonesian national team will compete alongside Japan, Qatar, and Thailand. This will mark Indonesia's sixth appearance in the competition, following their best performance to date during the 2023 edition under coach Shin Tae-yong.
