Saudi Arabia Asian Cup 2027 faces potential postponement amid security concerns

The 2027 AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be hosted in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027, faces potential postponement due to heightened security concerns. Following a deadly attack on Riyadh’s international airport by the Houthi movement, which resulted in at least 12 deaths and over 300 injuries, AFC President Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa indicated that moving the tournament to 2028 is a possibility if the regional situation does not improve.

Despite the uncertainty, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) maintains that preparations for the tournament are proceeding according to the approved schedule, including work on venues, facilities, and supporting services. The tournament is planned to take place across Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al Khobar.

Other sporting events in the region have already been impacted by the security situation. The Saudi International golf tournament has been postponed indefinitely, the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition has been moved to December, and the FIFAe Finals 2026 has been delayed to an unspecified date. Additionally, Australia has withdrawn from the Urban Cycling World Championships in Riyadh, citing safety concerns.
