AFC President Salman Al Khalifa backs Gianni Infantino for FIFA reelection

Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), has announced the organization's support for Gianni Infantino to secure a fourth term as FIFA President. The announcement was made during an extraordinary AFC congress in Tokyo.

This marks a significant shift in stance for Al Khalifa, who, along with leaders from UEFA and CONCACAF, had previously issued an open letter accusing Infantino of a “fundamental breach of trust” regarding a failed plan to sell commercial World Cup rights to private investors. Infantino has since apologized for communication and consultation errors related to that project.

While Al Khalifa acknowledged past disagreements, he emphasized the need to move forward, stating, “We believe football is strongest when we work together with a shared vision and a common purpose.” The AFC represents 47 federations, and its support is seen as a decisive factor for the March 2027 election. Potential candidates must submit their nominations by November 18.
