AfCFTA and Uganda push for digital trade integration
Efforts are underway to enhance intra-African trade through digital integration and harmonized customs procedures. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat is focusing on the interoperability of national customs systems to reduce border delays. A key initiative involves developing a continental platform for electronic certificates of origin, which are essential for determining eligibility for preferential tariff treatment.
To ensure compatibility with international practices, the AfCFTA Secretariat is collaborating with the World Customs Organization to align technical standards and data validation. This work aims to resolve uncertainties for traders regarding documentation and eligibility.
In parallel, Uganda is advocating for a unified African digital market. Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Minister Sanjay Tanna emphasized the need for harmonized trade rules, reliable payment systems, and efficient customs to support regional integration. The goal is to enable local enterprises, particularly small businesses and women entrepreneurs, to access customers across borders via online platforms and participate effectively in the expanding digital economy.
