Saxony-Anhalt political parties negotiate leadership and government formation

Following the recent Landtag election in Saxony-Anhalt, political maneuvering is underway to establish a functioning government. The AfD emerged as the strongest party with 39 seats, three short of an absolute majority in the 83-seat parliament.

Reports indicate a potential arrangement between the AfD and the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). Under this proposed deal, the BSW would support an AfD candidate for Landtag President—with Tobias Rausch being a leading name—while the BSW would seek a Vice President post. BSW leadership has expressed openness to supporting the AfD's parliamentary presidency based on tradition, though they have denied a formal binding deal and stated they would not vote for an AfD Minister President, opting instead to abstain.

In response to these developments, the SPD has initiated talks to explore alternative government formations. The SPD has invited representatives from the CDU, Greens, Linke, and BSW to meetings in Magdeburg to discuss the possibility of a stable government, potentially led by an inter-party Minister President. While the Greens and Linke have accepted the invitation, the AfD has been excluded from these specific discussions.
