AfD challenges German Embassy funding for Skopje theater production

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has challenged the German government regarding the funding of a theatrical production in Skopje, North Macedonia. The play, titled ‘Angjëjt në Amerikë’ (Angels in America), focuses on the lives of queer characters in 1980s New York and was staged at the National Theatre of North Macedonia in 2025.

While the AfD and the tabloid Bild claimed the production was an example of ideological development aid, records indicate the funding was not from German development funds. Instead, the German Embassy in Skopje provided 2,000 euros from a small fund dedicated to culture and science, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture. Additionally, certain controversial elements cited by Bild, such as a specific description of an angel, were not part of the Skopje production.
