AfD outlines conditions for potential CDU/CSU minority government cooperation

An internal strategy paper from the AfD parliamentary group has revealed plans for potential cooperation with the CDU/CSU in the event of a Union-led minority government. The document, reportedly introduced by deputy parliamentary leader Sebastian Münzenmaier, outlines three scenarios: total refusal of cooperation, punctual cooperation until the next federal election, or case-by-case collaboration based on specific issues.

The AfD has stated that such support would not be provided ‘for free’ and requires ‘equal treatment.’ Demanded concessions include a Vice President position in the Bundestag, committee chairmanships, access to the parliamentary meeting room currently used by the SPD, and increased involvement in parliamentary deliberations.

Additionally, the AfD seeks cooperation on specific policy goals, such as tightening citizenship laws, abolishing dual citizenship, returning to nuclear energy, and cutting Bürgergeld benefits for Ukrainian refugees. The Union has rejected these plans; CSU leader Alexander Hoffmann dismissed them as ‘games’ to maintain relevance, while CDU leader Thorsten Frei described the prospect of a minority government as ‘madness.’
