AfD faces fallout from massive data leak of 420,000 emails

A major hacker attack on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has resulted in the leak of approximately 420,000 emails and 50,000 documents, totaling roughly 280 gigabytes of data. The stolen material includes bank statements, donation records, meeting minutes, and voice messages, spanning from 2013 to 2026.

Investigations by media outlets and research networks have revealed several sensitive findings. The leaked data shows that the AfD stored sensitive information of at least 1,000 journalists publicly, including photos of press IDs that contained private home addresses. Additionally, an internal list titled “Antifa members” reportedly contained the personal data of 19 Finns, contributing to a total of 23 Finns identified in the leak. The data appears to have originated from a 2015 breach of the German online shop Impact.

Internal communications also highlight historical party tensions. Emails from 2015 to 2017 show that current party leader Alice Weidel had internally warned leadership about the dangers posed by the party’s right-wing extremist wing. Weidel also previously used internal communications to advocate for addressing the gender pay gap, noting that women earned up to 30 percent less than men for the same work.
