AfD demands halt to German military and financial aid for Ukraine
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has introduced a controversial motion in the Bundestag calling for an immediate freeze on all German military and financial aid to Ukraine, with the exception of humanitarian assistance. During a heated parliamentary debate, AfD representative Markus Frohnmaier accused the German government of acting as a “branch of the Ukrainian government” and characterized the current level of support as a betrayal of German interests.
The AfD's proposal also demands that Germany block Ukraine's membership in the European Union and oppose allied security guarantees for Kyiv. Furthermore, the party suggested that in exchange for loans provided to Ukraine, Germany should demand privileged access to raw materials, such as rare earth metals and gas. Frohnmaier also leveled accusations against Ukraine regarding the Nord Stream pipeline.
Other parliamentary groups in the Bundestag strongly condemned the motion. Representatives from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Greens, and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) argued that the AfD's position aligns with Russian interests and undermines European security. Critics described the party's rhetoric as spreading Russian propaganda and warned that the motion seeks to support Vladimir Putin's objectives.
