AfD election victory in Saxony-Anhalt triggers teacher recruitment concerns

Following the electoral success of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt, where the party emerged as the strongest force across most demographic groups, the region is seeing immediate social and professional repercussions.

Reports indicate that several prospective teachers have withdrawn their job applications due to the election results. These candidates cited concerns regarding the AfD's proposed educational reforms, which include revising history curricula, abolishing anti-racism programs, enforcing strict teacher neutrality, and banning rainbow flags in schools. The party also proposes separate classrooms for refugee children and the termination of inclusive education models.

In response, the teachers' union GEW has developed a survival guide to help educators navigate potential policy changes and defend their rights. Meanwhile, Christian Democrat Education Minister Jan Rittel has urged educators to remain united and maintain an open school culture despite the current atmosphere of insecurity.
