AfD events spark protests and municipal debates in Germany
Political tensions have surfaced in German municipalities regarding the use of public facilities for Alternative for Germany (AfD) events. In Geisa, the city administration issued a statement addressing upcoming AfD meetings at the Kulturhaus Geisa. The city emphasized its obligation to political neutrality and the principle of equal treatment, noting that municipal spaces must be available to all political parties regardless of their orientation. The administration also acknowledged scheduled counter-demonstrations, citing constitutional protections for both freedom of expression and freedom of assembly.
In Düsseldorf, approximately 220 protesters gathered at the St. Benedikt-Hauptschule to oppose a district party convention held by the AfD. Organized by the alliance ‘Düsseldorf stellt sich quer’, the demonstration included members of the education union GEW, Caritas, and various local initiatives. Protesters demanded that the city cease renting school facilities for political party events. Despite the presence of significant police forces to manage access and escort delegates, the party convention proceeded without reported incidents.
