AfD gains major victories in German regional elections

Recent regional elections in Germany have signaled significant political shifts and increased polarization. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerged as the strongest single party in both Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD secured 43.8% of the vote, leaving the party just three seats short of an absolute majority in the 83-seat parliament. This result marks a substantial increase for the party compared to previous elections. Conversely, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, experienced a major decline, with its support in Saxony-Anhalt dropping to 17.2% from 37.1% in 2021.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the AfD also took the lead with 38.2% of the vote. Meanwhile, in Berlin, the Left party won the elections, while the CDU placed second and the AfD third. These results have prompted concerns regarding political extremism and social division, as an Ipsos poll indicated that 82% of German citizens believe the country is moving in the wrong direction.
