AfD hits record 27% in German poll, overtaking CDU/CSU
A new Forsa poll shows Germany's far‑right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) reaching a record high of 27 percent of voter intention, surpassing the centre-right CDU/CSU alliance, which fell to 21 percent, its lowest level since the last federal election. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remained at about 12 percent, while the Greens held 16 percent and the FDP 4 percent. The AfD also led on perceived political competence, with 15 percent of respondents rating it as most capable compared with 13 percent for the CDU/CSU. Overall, 53 percent of Germans expressed no confidence in any party to solve the country's problems. Satisfaction with Chancellor Friedrich Merz stayed low, with only 15 percent of respondents approving of his work. In a separate regional survey for Berlin, the AfD was reported at 19 percent, ahead of Die Linke (18 percent) and the Greens (16 percent), based on a sample of 1,000 voters taken between 14 and 21 July.
