AfD re-elects leaders at Erfurt congress amid massive protests

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) held its federal party congress in Erfurt on July 4‑5 2026. Delegates re‑elected co‑leaders Alice Weidel, who received 81 % of the vote, and Tino Chrupalla, who secured 70 % – both without opposition. The congress focused on internal matters such as changes to the party’s statutes and financial rules, while the party prepared for upcoming state elections in Saxony‑Anhalt and Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern.

The event was accompanied by large-scale demonstrations. Police estimates recorded up to 31,000 participants, while protest groups claimed more than 50,000. Demonstrators, organized chiefly by the anti‑far‑right alliance “Widersetzen,” attempted to block access roads and the A71 highway, causing traffic disruptions. Law‑enforcement deployed thousands of officers, water‑canon units and used batons and pepper spray in several confrontations, though the overall protest was described as “mostly peaceful.”

AfD officials framed the congress as a demonstration of democratic rights, with Chrupalla accusing opponents of trying to monopolise democracy. The party portrayed itself as a “new people’s party” poised for future government participation, citing strong polling ahead of the federal election and recent state polls.
