AfD leader Alice Weidel proposes Germany exit eurozone and Schengen

Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has announced that if the party enters federal government, it will seek Germany's withdrawal from both the eurozone and the Schengen Area.

In recent interviews, Weidel characterized the euro as an “unstable” and “soft” currency, arguing that Germany enjoyed a stronger economic position prior to its adoption. The AfD's platform includes a return to national monetary policy and the potential reintroduction of a national currency.

Regarding migration, Weidel proposed closing national borders, increasing deportations, and restricting the granting of German citizenship. She specifically mentioned returning Syrian nationals whose protection status has expired.

The party is currently seeing significant growth in polls. In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD holds 41% support, while nationally, the party maintains 27% support, leading the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which stands at 22%.
