AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund links defense industry to mass deportations

Ulrich Siegmund, co-leader of the AfD parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt, has sparked intense political controversy following comments linking defense industry production to mass deportation plans. Speaking in Magdeburg regarding the potential establishment of an Elbit Systems production site in Sangerhausen, Siegmund stated that his party does not reject arms production, noting they would naturally require “appropriate auxiliary tools” for future “remigration” and deportation operations.

Following widespread condemnation, Siegmund attempted to clarify his remarks, arguing that defense industry production encompasses more than just heavy weaponry, including vehicles, protective technologies, and equipment necessary for law enforcement and security institutions. He defended his stance as a “political responsibility” for the state to ensure the capacity for decisive deportation processes.

Political opponents have reacted sharply. Katja Pähle of the SPD described the comments as a disturbing shift in public discourse, suggesting that invoking military-grade equipment for mass expulsions equates to using violence as a political instrument. Additionally, Claudia Wittig of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) criticized the remarks, stating that deportation is not a military task and that such rhetoric serves as a provocation.
