AfD leader warns against escalating conflict with Russia

Tino Chrupalla, deputy leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has warned against escalating tensions with Russia following a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The incident, which occurred on August 4-5, involved the interception of a drone carrying an explosive device; however, no group has claimed responsibility.

Chrupalla criticized politicians from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) for suggesting retaliatory covert operations and invoking NATO's Article 4. He argued that there is no evidence linking Russia to the drone incident and urged members of the CDU, led by Friedrich Merz, to remain calm to avoid a conflict with a nuclear power. Chrupalla expressed support for Armin Laschet, who described accusations against Russia as ‘irresponsible,’ suggesting that Germany should focus on protecting infrastructure rather than escalating rhetoric.
