AfD leaders propose Euro exit and Schengen withdrawal FAST-MOVING

In high-profile summer interviews with public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, leaders of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party outlined radical policy shifts and expressed confidence ahead of upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Co-leader Alice Weidel announced that if the AfD enters government, the party would pursue an exit from the Eurozone and the Schengen Agreement. She characterized the Euro as an 'unstable' currency that contributes to the impoverishment of the working class. Regarding migration, Weidel called for closing German borders and the deportation of all 1.3 million Syrians currently residing in the country.

Co-leader Tino Chrupalla dismissed the climate crisis as 'panic-mongering' and a 'side issue,' arguing that the government uses climate policy to extract money from citizens via CO2 levies. He advocated for adaptation measures like widespread air conditioning rather than mitigation. Chrupalla also expressed skepticism regarding the integrity of postal voting, suggesting it should be abolished due to potential manipulation in nursing homes.

Weidel also directed sharp criticism at Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, labeling them 'incompetents' and 'Flachzangen.' She predicted that the CDU's policy of maintaining a 'firewall' against the AfD would lead to the party losing all future federal elections.
