Bavarian courts uphold surveillance of AfD party

The Bavarian Administrative Court and the Bavarian Constitutional Court have confirmed that the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution may continue to observe the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as a suspected extremist group. The courts rejected the AfD’s appeal against a 2022 classification, stating that the party’s statements on “remigration” and other anti‑democratic remarks “exceed the permissible limits of criticism.” The rulings cite earlier decisions of the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Administrative Court, deeming the observation proportionate and lawful. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann praised the decision, saying it is “a clear sign for our democracy and the rule of law.” Multiple Bavarian courts have thus upheld the surveillance regime, reinforcing legal safeguards against extremist activities within the party.
