Saxony-Anhalt CDU faces internal rift over AfD Minister-President vote

The CDU parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt is experiencing internal division ahead of the December election for Minister-President. While the faction officially decided to boycott the vote by leaving the plenary hall during the first two rounds to prevent any CDU member from secretly supporting the AfD candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, former parliamentary group leader Guido Heuer has broken with this line. Heuer announced his intention to remain in the hall, stating he wishes to avoid a pre-determination of his vote and seeks legal counsel.

Acting Minister-President Sven Schulze expressed composure regarding Heuer’s decision, noting that the party's official stance remains that no CDU votes will be cast for the AfD. The political tension follows the September state election, where the AfD emerged as the strongest force with 43.8 percent of the vote, while the CDU received 17.2 percent.

Additionally, the election of AfD politician Tobias Rausch as Landtag President has fueled speculation regarding secret voting patterns within the CDU. Rausch, who was elected with 48 votes, has indicated a willingness to resign his position as AfD state secretary to maintain a clearer separation of duties in his parliamentary role.
