AfD politician denied dog adoption by welfare group

The animal welfare organization Fortuna Animali has reportedly refused to facilitate a dog adoption for Vanessa Behrendt, a member of the AfD state parliament in Lower Saxony. According to published chat messages, the refusal was based on Behrendt’s political affiliation with the AfD.

The decision has sparked significant public debate regarding the intersection of political views and animal welfare. Many critics argue that adoption decisions should focus solely on the ability to provide a good home for the animal, warning that using political criteria contributes to social polarization. Others defend the organization's right to set boundaries regarding its members.

The controversy also drew a sharp reaction from Formula 1 commentator Heiko Wasser, who criticized the decision on social media with harsh language before later deleting his posts and admitting he had overstepped. Behrendt, a former medical assistant and trained dog therapist, has served in the Lower Saxony state parliament since 2022.
