AfD Politician Michael Genniges Returns Honours Medal as Oberfranken Overhauls Award Rules

AfD deputy Michael Genniges handed back the silver honour medal that the Oberfranken district had awarded him after the decoration sparked public criticism, including from the Alliance against Right‑Wing Extremism in the Nuremberg metropolitan area.

District council president Henry Schramm presented a draft of new guidelines for the conferment of honour medals. The proposal calls for a stricter formal and substantive review of nominees, checks for extremist or radical positions, and requires a self‑declaration from the candidate. It also outlines procedures for revoking medals in cases of unworthy conduct, constitutional hostility, serious criminal convictions, or actions that damage the district's reputation. The draft will be discussed by council factions before a final vote, and the council will retain the ultimate decision‑making authority. A request for comment from Genniges was not answered.
