AfD politicians propose Ukrainian neutrality and closer ties to Russia
Foreign policy experts from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, including Martin Frohnmaier, Gerold Otten, and Stefan Keuter, have released two position papers outlining new strategic directions for German foreign policy.
The first paper focuses on relations with Russia and Ukraine, advocating for Ukraine to become a neutral state and explicitly stating that membership in both the EU and NATO should be rejected. The authors argue that reclaiming territories occupied by Russia, including Crimea, is unrealistic and call for the German government to end military support for Ukraine as soon as possible. They also propose reducing financial and economic aid to Ukraine and oppose German cooperation in developing weapons intended for use against Russia. Additionally, the papers call for the end of economic sanctions against Russia and the reactivation of the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
The second paper addresses relations with the United States, expressing support for the foreign policy approach of President Donald Trump. The AfD politicians welcome the potential reduction of US troop presence in Germany, provided that German military strength increases accordingly. However, they oppose the stationing of US intermediate-range missiles on German soil to avoid provoking Russia. The document describes a desire for pragmatic transatlantic cooperation and supports Trump's stance against what the party labels as "woke ideology" in international organizations.
