Saxony-Anhalt election: AfD nears absolute majority as Campact launches strategic voting campaign
As the Saxony-Anhalt state election approaches on September 6, political tension is rising due to polling that suggests the AfD could achieve an absolute majority. According to a Pollytix poll, the AfD is predicted to receive 43 percent of the vote, while the CDU is at 23 percent, the SPD at 7 percent, and the Greens at 5 percent.
In response, the campaign organization Campact has launched a 620,000 Euro strategic voting campaign. The initiative encourages voters to use their second votes for the SPD or Greens to ensure they cross the five-percent threshold, thereby preventing an AfD single-party government. Campact reported that the SPD and Greens each received 310,000 Euro in non-monetary support through this campaign, which includes posters, digital ads, and mailings.
In Berlin, the Bundesrat is adjusting its rules of procedure to ensure robust operations in the event of an AfD-led state government. Bundesrat President Andreas Bovenschulte stated that while political dynamics may shift, he does not expect the AfD to be able to significantly delay or derail the council's business processes.
Meanwhile, AfD top candidate Ulrich Siegmund has faced scrutiny after Spiegel magazine featured him on its cover, labeling him the ‘most dangerous man in Germany’. Siegmund responded by calling the coverage a ‘knighthood’ for his political efforts.
