AfD rise challenges Germany’s political ‘Brandmauer’ firewall

The political concept of the ‘Brandmauer’—a firewall intended to isolate the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) from government cooperation—is facing significant challenges in Germany. In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD is no longer automatically excluded from government formation processes. The Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) has signaled a willingness to engage with all parties, suggesting they might abstain in votes to potentially allow an AfD candidate to be elected.

This shift has caused internal friction within established parties. Within the SPD, leaders are divided between maintaining the firewall and addressing the political issues driving AfD support. Former Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel has criticized the strategy, arguing that the ‘Brandmauer’ has become a slogan used to avoid competing on substantive policy issues.

Former Chancellor Angela Merkel has also commented on the situation, expressing heartbreak over the CDU’s declining regional polling numbers compared to the AfD’s rise. Merkel criticized the use of a ‘cordon sanitaire’ against the far right, stating that such tactics do not win over voters, and emphasized the need for clarity regarding cooperation with the AfD and pension reforms.
