AfD election gains in Saxony-Anhalt spark isolation warnings

German politician Johann Wadephul has warned that the rising influence of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party could weaken the nation and lead to diplomatic isolation within Europe. His comments follow the AfD's significant performance in the Saxony-Anhalt regional elections, where the party secured 43.8% of the vote and 39 of the 83 available seats in the local parliament. This result represents more than a doubling of the party's 20,8% share from 2021.

In the Saxony-Anhalt parliament, the AfD joined forces with the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) to pass a proposal calling for the cessation of sanctions against Russia and the termination of weapons deliveries to Ukraine. Wadephul, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), stated that the regional decision holds no legal weight regarding federal foreign policy, as that authority rests with federal institutions. He characterized the proposal as being contrary to German national interests.
