AfD reaches record 30% support in Germany as CDU/CSU support falls

Recent national polling in Germany indicates a major political shift, with the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) reaching a record 30 percent support. This surge places the AfD significantly ahead of the conservative CDU/CSU block, which has seen its support drop to historic lows between 17.5 and 20 percent.

Other major parties, including the SPD and the Greens, are polling at approximately 14 percent, while the FDP and the BSW remain below the 5 percent electoral threshold. Public dissatisfaction with the federal government and Chancellor Friedrich Merz is notably high, with approximately 79 percent of respondents expressing discontent.

In response to these shifts, the AfD is reportedly considering a strategic pivot regarding the European Union and the euro, moving from outright exit demands toward seeking fundamental reforms to increase national sovereignty. Meanwhile, within the FDP, motions have been introduced to reconsider the 'firewall' strategy, suggesting a more pragmatic approach to cooperation with the AfD on specific policy issues.
